Joanne Gale as Charity Royall

‘The character of Charity is beautifully drawn, strong but also vulnerable, frustrated by the expectations placed on her sex by society.’ EXEUNT

‘The performances are good, with Joanne Gale capturing the headstrong girl with all the sarcasm and moodiness that you’d expect from a teenager without seeming incongruent to the time. Francis Adams is perfectly cast as the patriarchal Royall, creating a good man whose morals you can begin to mistrust as the story unfolds. In the second half, there is a lovely moment as he addresses the audience (as the townspeople) and you get a real sense of his guilt and fear underneath his speech. Mundell, in a subtle performance, builds a steamy chemistry with Gale and the two express a very convincing love for each other.’ One Stop Arts

‘Alesya Bolotina’s set design is simple yet effective… The small studio space has been reconfigured, and this new set up allows director Timothy Stubbs Hughes to create a real sense of flow and pace’ EXEUNT

The World Premiere production of Summer is on until Saturday 26th May at the Jack Studio Theatre, London

Our ‘Summer’ Book

Summer by Julia Stubbs Hughes

Our Book is the company’s exploration of the play, Edith Wharton, the period in history when we are setting the production, and thoughts and opinions from people who we are engaging with.

Its our connection: with people who love Edith Wharton, who have an opinion of her, who have been inspired and moved by her writing, the company will express their own discoveries and thoughts as we move through the rehearsal process into performance.

Our ‘Summer’ Book is just a beginning

I think Summer by Julia Stubbs Hughes | based on the novella by Edith Wharton is a well written article and you do a nice job of posting in depth. TJ – http://www.ep2p4u.com

Congratulations on the lovely notices for “Summer”. To my knowledge there have been two other stage adaptations – the first by Dennis Krausnick of Shakespeare & Co. which played at the Mount in 2000 and in 2010, and another in spring of 2011 on Theatre Row in New York. There was also an opera commissioned for the Berkshire Opera in 1999.

The film is moving along. We’re deep in casting for Charity right now. This is really the most important decision for any production. Happily, there are some wonderful girls who are interested.

At some point I’d love to see the adaptation you’ve created. I’d gladly swap a copy of my screenplay. “Summer” is a great text, and it’s extraordinary the range of responses that it generates.

Wish I were in town and could buy a ticket!

    Carl
