The ‘Summer’ production

“I went there to see him but I didn’t go in because I was afraid. Afraid that he’d think I’d come after him.”

Eighteen year old Charity Royall lives in the remote village of North Dormer with her guardian and father-figure Lawyer Royall.

Lucius Harney, a young architect with his knowledge and experience of progressive New York, then comes into their lives.

Set in a society that values tradition over love, Julia Stubbs Hughes’ new play focuses solely on the novel’s three main characters and explores how a young woman dreams of escaping her confined world.

Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was one of America’s greatest writers. She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1921 for ‘The Age of Innocence’ and 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of her birth. This premiere will coincide with those celebrations and hope to show how Wharton is now considered by many to be an iconic writer for the 21st century.

This World Premiere, produced by 20 South Street and supported by Grey Swan is being directed by Timothy Stubbs Hughes, who brought ‘bodies unfinished’ by Lewis Hetherington to the Jack Studio Theatre in 2011, which was subsequently nominated for five Off-West End awards including Best New Play and Best Production.
